Greek expatriates living in Saudi Arabia have expressed pride in their home country's military cooperation with the Kingdom, saying the partnership connects their Greek heritage with their lives in Saudi Arabia. The cooperation has gained personal significance amid heightened regional tensions and efforts to protect critical infrastructure. According to a report by Arab News, Greece's contribution includes the deployment of Patriot air defence systems to help protect important Saudi facilities. Greek residents interviewed by the publication described the cooperation as a sign of solidarity, mutual trust and closer relations between the two countries.
Ioannis Barmpounis, a Greek resident of Saudi Arabia, told Arab News that his country's contribution to the Kingdom's security made him feel proud and reassured. He expressed confidence in the professionalism and capabilities of the Greek armed forces. Barmpounis described the deployment as an opportunity for Greece to use its military expertise in support of an allied country. He also said the cooperation reflected a broader relationship built on friendship and shared values, including hospitality, respect for family and personal relationships.

Dimitra Chasapi, Barmpounis's wife, also welcomed Greece's support for Saudi Arabia. She described the partnership as a reflection of the trust and mutual respect developed between the two countries over years of diplomatic relations. Chasapi said Greece remained an important part of her identity, while Saudi Arabia was where she was building her personal and professional future. She viewed the two countries' cooperation as a meaningful connection between these two parts of her life. Both expatriates also pointed to similarities between Greek and Saudi cultures, particularly the importance placed on hospitality, generosity and family. They expressed hope that closer ties would encourage further cooperation in economic, professional and cultural areas.
According to the report, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias visited the Greek Patriot air defence contingent stationed in Yanbu on October 15, reaffirming Greece's commitment to supporting Saudi security. The deployment is part of a wider defence partnership focused on protecting strategic infrastructure, including energy facilities along Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast. Such facilities are important to Saudi Arabia's economy and play a role in global energy supply chains. The report also said Dendias met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman to discuss defence cooperation and regional security.
The report states that Greek-operated Patriot systems have been involved in intercepting aerial threats targeting Saudi infrastructure. It also refers to an announcement by Dendias in March 2026 that Greek forces had intercepted two Iranian ballistic missiles targeting Saudi refineries. These operational claims should be understood in the context of the report and attributed to the relevant officials. The deployment illustrates the role of defence cooperation in protecting strategic facilities and sharing military expertise. The report also mentions discussions about modernising Greece's Patriot systems, potentially involving Saudi financial cooperation and technical support from the United States.
Despite regional tensions, Barmpounis and Chasapi told Arab News that they had not experienced a significant disruption to their daily lives in Saudi Arabia. Barmpounis said he continued working, meeting friends and visiting restaurants, adding that he felt reassured by the Kingdom's security measures. Chasapi said it was important to remain aware of regional developments without assuming that awareness necessarily meant living in fear. Both residents expressed confidence in their personal safety and appreciation for the environment in which they were building their lives.
The two Greek expatriates expressed hope that cooperation between Greece and Saudi Arabia would continue contributing to regional stability. They also suggested that the relationship could create opportunities for stronger diplomatic, economic and cultural connections between Saudi Arabia and Europe. Their comments highlight the personal dimension of international relations, particularly for expatriates whose country of origin is cooperating with the country where they live. Beyond military agreements, they described trust, mutual respect and support during difficult periods as important elements of the partnership.
