Gold Prices Steady as Markets Await US Inflation Data Copy Main Heading

Post by : Shweta

Gold prices remained broadly stable during early Asian trading on Wednesday as investors waited for the latest US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report. The inflation figures could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve's upcoming monetary policy decisions. According to the Oman News Agency, spot gold was steady at $4,161.05 per ounce, while US gold futures increased by 0.2% to $4,185.

US Consumer Price Index in Focus

The US Consumer Price Index report was scheduled for release at 12:30 GMT on October 14. Investors were watching the figures for indications of whether inflationary pressures were easing or remaining persistent. Inflation data can influence expectations for interest rates, which in turn affect the attractiveness of gold and other financial assets. The US Producer Price Index and retail sales data were also expected on Thursday, October 15, according to the report.

Federal Reserve Interest Rate Expectations

Market participants were assessing the possibility of further interest rate changes by the US Federal Reserve. The report cited CME Group's FedWatch tool as showing a 23% probability of a rate hike in October and an 88% probability in December. These figures represent market-implied probabilities reported at the time and may change as new economic information becomes available. Investors were also monitoring comments from Federal Reserve officials for additional guidance on monetary policy.

Why Interest Rates Matter for Gold

Gold does not pay interest or generate regular income. When interest rates rise, interest-bearing investments can become more attractive relative to gold, potentially putting pressure on its price. Conversely, expectations of lower interest rates may support demand for the precious metal. However, gold prices are also influenced by the US dollar, inflation expectations, central bank purchases, investor demand and geopolitical uncertainty.

Federal Reserve Official Highlights Inflation Concerns

John Williams, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, reiterated his view that the US central bank might need to raise interest rates again during 2026 as it works to bring inflation down. His comments added to the policy uncertainty facing investors ahead of the latest inflation figures. The Federal Reserve's eventual decisions will depend on incoming economic data and its assessment of inflation and employment conditions.

IMF Warns of Risks to Global Economic Growth

The International Monetary Fund warned of significant risks to economic growth and financial stability. According to the supplied report, these risks included the possible end of the artificial intelligence investment boom, rising debt levels and the prolonged conflict in the Middle East. Such concerns can influence investor sentiment and demand for assets traditionally viewed as stores of value, although the direction of gold prices depends on several factors.

Silver, Platinum and Palladium Prices Decline

Other precious metals moved lower during the same trading session. Spot silver fell 0.5% to $59.12 per ounce, while platinum declined 0.4% to $1,656.08. Palladium slipped 0.1% to $1,124.39 per ounce. Investors were assessing the outlook for precious metals alongside inflation expectations, interest rate prospects and broader financial market developments

Gold's near-term direction will depend partly on the US inflation report and how it changes expectations for Federal Reserve policy. Stronger-than-expected inflation could reinforce expectations of tighter monetary policy, while softer inflation could support hopes for a less restrictive approach. These are possible market reactions rather than guaranteed outcomes, and prices can also respond to currency movements and global economic developments.
