The Greek Coast Guard rescued 118 people of foreign nationalities from the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Crete on Tuesday, according to a report published by Oman News Agency (ONA).
The people were travelling in two small boats when they were spotted by two passing ships. The vessels were located approximately 45 nautical miles southeast of Ierapetra, a city on the southeastern coast of Crete.

Following the sighting, the Greek Coast Guard carried out a rescue operation to bring the people to safety. All 118 individuals were subsequently transported safely to a local port, according to the report.
The incident highlights the continuing movement of migrants across the Mediterranean Sea, where people attempt sea journeys towards European destinations. Small boats can present significant safety challenges, particularly when travelling over long distances.
Greek authorities have also reported other migrant rescue operations in waters south of Crete. According to the Greek Broadcasting Corporation, approximately 200 migrants were rescued from the Mediterranean within a few hours last Tuesday, after a severe storm subsided.
Crete, located in the eastern Mediterranean, is an important point along several migration routes towards Greece. Rescue operations in the surrounding waters often involve the Coast Guard and vessels that identify people requiring assistance at sea.
The latest operation ended with the safe transfer of all 118 rescued individuals to a local port. The available report did not provide further details about their nationalities, ages, or the next steps in their processing by Greek authorities.
