Musk jokes about his election influence after Democrats gain control of both chambers of Congress

Washington, United States: Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has made a sarcastic remark about the Republican Party’s performance in the 2026 US midterm elections, following his reported spending of hundreds of millions of dollars to support Republican candidates and political groups.

Democrats gained control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives in the election held on Tuesday, November 3, according to the report published by AFP. The result marks a significant setback for President Donald Trump’s political agenda and the Republican Party’s position in Congress.

Reacting to the outcome, Musk posted on X: “Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time,” adding a shrug emoji. The comment appeared to be a sarcastic reference to criticism and jokes about his political involvement and influence in the election.

According to campaign finance tracker OpenSecrets, Musk contributed nearly $500 million to Republican political efforts, making him the largest individual contributor in a federal election cycle since unlimited election spending was permitted in 2010. Much of the money reportedly went to his Republican-aligned America PAC and the Republican Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC supporting Republican Senate candidates.

The Republican Senate Leadership Fund reportedly received $158 million from Musk in September to support Ken Paxton, the Republican Senate candidate in Texas. However, Democrat James Talarico defeated Paxton, who was described in the report as a close ally of President Trump. Talarico's victory also marked the first time a Democrat had won statewide office in Texas since 1994, according to AFP.

Addressing supporters at a victory rally in Austin, Talarico referred to the political and financial influence he faced during the campaign. He said his campaign had gone up against “the richest man in the world, the most powerful man in the world and the entire Washington, DC establishment.”

Musk’s post has drawn attention because of the contrast between his substantial financial support for Republican political efforts and the party’s reported losses in the midterm elections. The results could reshape the political balance in Washington and influence the direction of the Trump administration’s legislative agenda.
