Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing his career with the Portugal national team to an end after more than two decades. The 41-year-old footballer confirmed his decision through an emotional video shared on Instagram, stating that he would no longer represent his country.
Alongside the video, Ronaldo posted the message, “Portugal estará sempre em mim”, which means “Portugal will always be in me”. His announcement marks the end of a remarkable international journey that began in 2003 and saw him become one of the most successful players in Portuguese football history.
Ronaldo leaves international football as Portugal's all-time leading goalscorer and most-capped player. During his international career, he scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for the national team.
Since making his debut in 2003, he has played a major role in Portugal's achievements on the international stage. His leadership and performances helped the national side reach important milestones, including its first major international trophy.
One of the most memorable moments of Ronaldo's international career came at Euro 2016, when Portugal won its first major international football trophy. Ronaldo played an important part in the team's journey to the title.
He was also part of Portugal's successful campaigns in the UEFA Nations League, helping the country win the competition in 2019 and 2025. These achievements added to his legacy as one of Portugal's most influential footballers.
Ronaldo's retirement announcement comes after a period of reported tension surrounding the national team. In September, he left Portugal's training camp following a reported disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus.
He later addressed the situation through a detailed statement on Instagram. At that time, Ronaldo made it clear that he had no plans to retire from international football and remained available for national team selection.
Before making this announcement, Ronaldo had spoken about the possibility of ending his international career after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He also revealed that he had prepared a farewell letter before changing his mind following discussions with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença, who persuaded him to reconsider his decision.
His latest announcement brings an end to an international career that lasted more than 20 years, during which he established himself as Portugal's most prolific goalscorer and most-capped player.
