After leaving the mining area, the armed group reportedly moved into the nearby village. A confrontation then took place between the gang members and security personnel, according to the reported account from authorities.
Authorities said 12 soldiers were killed during the exchange of fire in the village. Combined with the five miners reported killed at the mining site, the death toll from the incident stands at 17.
Informal gold mining is an important economic activity in parts of Zamfara State, but mining communities have also faced security problems. Armed groups have repeatedly targeted workers and mining locations while seeking control over mining areas and access to gold.
According to the reported account, armed gangs operating in the area have targeted informal gold miners to demand control of mining sites and a share of gold extracted from them. Such activity has added to security challenges in northwestern Nigeria.
The latest incident is expected to draw further attention to security conditions around mining communities in Zamfara. Authorities have not provided further details on the identities of those responsible or whether any arrests have been made. The situation remains under investigation.
