Typhoon Champi swept past Taiwan on Saturday, October 24, 2026, leaving one person dead and 527 injured, according to the report. The storm brought strong winds and heavy rainfall, damaged trees and disrupted electricity supplies across parts of the island. Although Champi has weakened, it continues to move north toward the Chinese coast.
Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration reported that Champi was approximately 150 kilometres east of Taiwan on Saturday. The storm had previously reached super typhoon strength and was considered one of the strongest storms in the Pacific this year. Despite weakening, it was still producing gusts of around 126 kilometres per hour near its centre.

Taiwan’s fire department reported one death and 527 injuries associated with the storm. The fatality involved a man who was swept away by waves near Liuqiu Island. Heavy winds and torrential rain contributed to hazardous conditions, prompting continued caution as the weather system moved away from Taiwan.
The storm disrupted electricity supplies across Taiwan. Taipower reported that more than 167,000 homes had lost electricity at one point. Most affected households had been reconnected by the time of the report. Fallen trees and intermittent heavy showers were also reported in Taipei, highlighting the continuing effects of the storm.
Air travel was disrupted as airlines and authorities responded to the weather conditions. Taiwan’s transport ministry reported that 242 flights were cancelled on Saturday. This was an improvement compared with Friday, when cancellations had approached 1,000. Travellers were advised to check with airlines for updated schedules and operational information.
Authorities in parts of northern and central Taiwan, including Taipei, announced a second consecutive day of school and office closures on Saturday. The measures were intended to help protect residents while strong winds and rain continued to affect the region. Downed trees and passing rain squalls remained visible in the capital.
The Central Weather Administration’s forecast showed Champi turning north toward the Chinese coast, with the system expected eventually to move toward southern Japan. Taiwan regularly prepares for typhoons, which helps limit casualties, but storms can still cause injuries, infrastructure disruption and transport delays. Although typhoons are more common in summer, they can also affect the region during autumn.
