The fourth edition of Saudi Film Confex has highlighted the growing importance of cinema in promoting cultural identity, strengthening international relations and expanding Saudi Arabia's global presence. The event brought together filmmakers, actors, directors, media executives and representatives from the public and private sectors at JAX Studios in Diriyah. Industry leaders discussed how films and cultural storytelling can influence international perceptions of a country and create opportunities across different economic sectors.
Abdulatif bin Mohammed Al-Abdulatif, CEO of the General Authority for Media Regulation, highlighted the importance of filmmaking as a tool of cultural communication and international engagement. Speaking during the opening panel, he explained that films and television productions can help shape how international audiences understand a country. He also noted that positive cinematic representation can support sectors such as tourism, trade, investment and international business cooperation.

Al-Abdulatif emphasised that locally produced cultural content plays an important role in presenting Saudi society and its traditions to international audiences. He described drama production as an effective way to communicate the identity and image of a nation. He also highlighted the responsibility of media organisations to promote cultural content within the Kingdom and introduce Saudi creative work to audiences abroad.
Abdullah Al-Eyaf, CEO of the Film Commission, discussed the close relationship between the film and media industries. He described the two sectors as closely connected, explaining that media promotion plays an important role in increasing the visibility and commercial reach of films. According to Al-Eyaf, Saudi films generated approximately SAR 122 million in box office revenue last year, compared with SAR 56.8 million in 2024, representing an increase of around 114 percent.
Al-Eyaf revealed that Saudi films accounted for less than 3 percent of the 538 films screened in the Kingdom last year. Despite their relatively small share of total screenings, local productions generated approximately 13 percent of overall box office revenue. He credited media coverage and promotional activities with helping Saudi films reach wider audiences and gain greater visibility in the domestic market.
The fourth edition of Saudi Film Confex featured discussions, workshops and industry sessions covering different stages of filmmaking, including production, casting, financing and distribution. Participants also explored the growing role of artificial intelligence and modern technologies in transforming the film industry. Discussions focused on how these technologies could create new opportunities for production companies, filmmakers and creative businesses operating in Saudi Arabia.
The event also witnessed the signing of several agreements, including partnerships with FilmLab and Cine Wave for the distribution of three upcoming films. These agreements aim to introduce Saudi stories to wider audiences and strengthen the distribution network for locally produced cinema. The event was held under the patronage of Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, Minister of Culture and Chairman of the Saudi Film Commission's Board of Directors.
The latest edition follows the previous year's event, during which spending on Film Commission-backed projects reached SAR 1.3 billion, equivalent to approximately $347 million. The figures highlight the scale of investment being directed towards Saudi Arabia's film and creative industries. Through initiatives involving production, technology, distribution and talent development, the Kingdom continues to expand its entertainment sector and create opportunities for local and international industry participants.
