Romania Blames Russia After Cargo Ship Sinks in Black Sea

Post by : Shweta

Cargo Ship Sends Distress Signal off Romania

A cargo ship sank in the Black Sea off Romania’s coast on Friday, October 23, 2026, after what Romanian authorities described as a drone strike. The incident left at least one sailor dead, while three crew members remained missing. Romanian rescue teams launched an operation after receiving a distress signal from the vessel.

Nine Sailors Rescued, One Body Recovered

Romania’s naval authority identified the vessel as the Comoros-flagged Khoryv. It was carrying 13 Ukrainian and Azerbaijani sailors and sent its distress signal about 13 nautical miles from the port of Constanta, just beyond Romania’s territorial waters. Nine crew members were rescued from the sea, one body was recovered, and three sailors remained unaccounted for as the search continued.

Romanian President Accuses Russia

Romanian President Nicusor Dan accused Russia of escalating its actions along NATO’s eastern flank. Speaking to reporters, he said the sinking was part of Russia’s escalation in its war against Ukraine. Romanian authorities released video showing only a small section of the capsized vessel’s hull remaining visible above the water.

Rescue Teams Search in Difficult Conditions

Emergency vessels searched the surrounding waters amid choppy seas and strong winds. The difficult weather conditions complicated the search for the missing sailors. The available report did not provide further details about the identities of the rescued crew members or the missing sailors.

Recent Incidents Raise Concerns over Black Sea Shipping

The report said at least seven commercial ships had been hit off the coasts of NATO members Romania and Bulgaria during the preceding two weeks, with around 30 sailors reported dead or missing. The vessels affected in recent incidents had either been anchored near or travelling towards the Sulina Canal, an important route connecting the Danube River with the Black Sea.

Ukraine’s Export Route and NATO Response

The Sulina Canal has become a key export route for Ukraine, a major global exporter of grain and food oils. Ukraine has relied on Danube ports and Romanian territorial waters as Russia has attacked Ukrainian Black Sea ports. Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria have called on NATO to strengthen protection for commercial shipping in the region.

NATO Plans Additional Maritime Support

NATO said it would send more maritime patrol aircraft, radar systems and drones to the Black Sea, although the alliance had not specified the exact capabilities to be deployed. The report also said Romanian jets had shot down two Russian drones over Romanian territorial waters on the previous Saturday. The cause and circumstances of the cargo ship incident should be reported with attribution to Romanian authorities, while the search for the missing sailors continues
