Nepal Suspends Search for Flood Missing

Post by : Shweta

Search Operations Suspended

Nepal has suspended search and rescue operations linked to the devastating floods that affected the country in August 2026. Authorities said the decision comes after extensive efforts to locate people reported missing following the floods.

Thousands Remain Missing

According to the latest figures, 1,455 bodies have been recovered while 5,285 people remain missing. The scale of the missing-person figure has made the floods one of the country's most serious recent humanitarian emergencies.

Thousands of People Affected

Around 33,000 people were affected by the floods, according to authorities. Many communities faced damage to homes, roads and other essential infrastructure as floodwaters affected several areas.

Homes Damaged or Destroyed

Approximately 7,500 homes were damaged or destroyed in the flooding. The housing damage has added to the challenges facing families and communities as Nepal moves from emergency response toward longer-term recovery.

Focus Shifts to Reconstruction

With search operations suspended, Nepalese authorities are now expected to focus more heavily on reconstruction and the repair of damaged infrastructure. The recovery phase will require extensive work across affected communities.

Billions Needed for Recovery

The estimated cost of reconstruction and recovery has reached around $4.77 billion. The figure reflects the scale of infrastructure, housing and other damage caused by the floods.

Nepal Begins Long Recovery Phase

The shift from search operations to reconstruction marks a new phase in Nepal's response to the disaster. Authorities will need to restore damaged infrastructure and support affected communities while continuing to address information about those still reported missing.
