Wanindu Hasaranga Named In Sri Lanka Squad For Asia Cup

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Sri Lanka’s cricket board has announced that leg-spin all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been named in the 16-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. This decision comes even though Hasaranga is recovering from a hamstring injury that had earlier ruled him out of Sri Lanka’s T20I series against Zimbabwe. His selection shows that the team management is hopeful he will regain full fitness in time for the important regional tournament.

Recent Injury Concerns

Hasaranga picked up his hamstring injury during Sri Lanka’s T20I series against Bangladesh earlier this year. Since then, he has been going through rehabilitation and recovery. Missing the Zimbabwe series was a setback for both the player and the team, but his inclusion in the Asia Cup squad signals confidence from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) that he will recover quickly. Fans are now eager to see if he can return to full form in time.

Squad Changes For The Tournament

The Asia Cup squad has seen only two changes compared to the group that faced Zimbabwe. Hasaranga replaces Dushan Hemantha, while uncapped batter Vishen Halambage has been left out for the multi-nation event. These adjustments highlight the selectors’ belief in experience and proven performance, particularly in a high-pressure competition like the Asia Cup.

Strong Spin Bowling Options

With Hasaranga back, Sri Lanka’s spin attack looks strong. He joins off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana and left-arm spin all-rounder Dunith Wellalage. The three spinners together give Sri Lanka variety and depth in their bowling attack. Spin has always been Sri Lanka’s strength, and having three different types of spin bowlers could prove vital on UAE pitches, which are often helpful for spin bowling.

Tournament Schedule In The UAE

The Asia Cup will be played in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to 28. Sri Lanka will begin their campaign on September 13 against Bangladesh at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. This match is expected to be intense because the two teams met recently in a bilateral series, where competition was tough. Fans are calling it a rematch and looking forward to another exciting contest.

Group B Opponents For Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is placed in Group B along with Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong. After their first match against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka will also face Afghanistan and Hong Kong in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. These matches will decide whether Sri Lanka advances to the next stage of the tournament. Afghanistan is seen as a tough opponent due to their powerful spin attack, while Hong Kong is considered an underdog team but capable of surprises.

Past Asia Cup Performances

Sri Lanka has a proud history in the Asia Cup. In 2023, the team reached the final, showing their competitiveness at the regional level. In 2022, when the tournament was held in the T20I format in the UAE, Sri Lanka won the competition, giving them great confidence on UAE soil. These past successes make Sri Lanka one of the favorites to go deep into the 2025 edition as well.

Importance As World Cup Preparation

The Asia Cup 2025 is not just a standalone tournament—it also serves as a key preparation platform for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The next World Cup will be co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India, making it even more significant for the island nation. Playing in a competitive environment like the Asia Cup will help Sri Lanka identify its strengths and weaknesses before the big global event.

Hasaranga’s Role In The Team

Wanindu Hasaranga is one of Sri Lanka’s most valuable players. As a leg-spin bowler and a hard-hitting middle-order batter, he offers balance to the team. His ability to take wickets in the middle overs and score quick runs makes him a match-winner. If he is fit and performs well, he could play a key role in Sri Lanka’s chances of progressing deep into the tournament.

Fans Eager For His Return

Cricket fans in Sri Lanka and around the world are excited about Hasaranga’s possible return. His absence during the Zimbabwe series was felt strongly, and his presence will boost the team’s morale. Social media has already been filled with messages of support, with many hoping he can deliver match-winning performances in the Asia Cup.

Bangladesh Match Seen As Key

The opening match against Bangladesh is being viewed as one of the most important games of the group stage. The two sides have developed a strong rivalry in recent years, and their matches are often competitive. A win in this opening clash could set the tone for Sri Lanka’s entire campaign. Players and fans alike are preparing for what promises to be a high-energy game.

Afghanistan And Hong Kong Challenges

While Bangladesh may be the most familiar opponent, Afghanistan presents a different challenge. Known for their spinners like Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Afghanistan will test Sri Lanka’s batting lineup. On the other hand, Hong Kong, though less experienced, has shown determination in past tournaments. Sri Lanka cannot afford to underestimate any team in the group.

Building Momentum For The Team

The Asia Cup will help Sri Lanka build momentum and confidence ahead of the World Cup. Playing on UAE pitches, which often offer slow conditions and assist spin, gives Sri Lanka a chance to practice in similar conditions to what they might face in future tournaments. Strong performances here will give them a psychological advantage before the World Cup.

The inclusion of Wanindu Hasaranga in Sri Lanka’s 16-member Asia Cup squad is a positive sign for the team. Despite injury concerns, his presence adds experience, balance, and confidence to the side. With tough opponents like Bangladesh and Afghanistan ahead, Sri Lanka will rely on Hasaranga’s skills and leadership to guide them through. The Asia Cup promises to be an exciting event, serving both as a battle for regional glory and as valuable preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
