Al-Nassr is trying to extend Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract, but many other clubs are also interested in signing the legendary footballer, said the Saudi club’s sporting director, Fernando Hierro, on Thursday.
Ronaldo, who is now 40 years old, sparked rumors about his future after Al-Nassr’s last match of the season against Al-Fateh on Monday. He shared a post on social media saying, “This chapter is over. The story? Still being written.”
Hierro confirmed that Ronaldo’s current contract with Al-Nassr ends on June 30, and the club is working hard to keep him. “We want him to stay with us,” said Hierro, “but we know many clubs are interested in him.”
Even though Al-Nassr didn’t qualify for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently said that talks are ongoing for Ronaldo to possibly take part in the tournament, which runs from June 14 to July 13 in the United States.
FIFA has even opened a special transfer window so clubs can sign players just for this event. Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca was rumored to be interested, but a source close to them said they are not in talks with Ronaldo.
Ronaldo has been the top scorer in the Saudi Pro League for two seasons in a row. Hierro praised his impact, calling him a key figure in promoting Saudi football.
“Cristiano has played a huge role in putting Saudi football on the world map. It’s amazing that he chose to come here and help grow the sport in this country,” Hierro added.
